Really like this idea of how to use the matrix in a more organic way. Quick question: many of my clients ruminate or worry in response to bottom LHS. I want to sort rumination and worry into the top LHS as covert behaviours but don’t because that section is supposed to be for observable behaviour. I feel really stuck with this so any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi Jacky,

There are a few different ways to work with something like this. Many clinicians will put the ruminative thoughts in the lower left hand square, and then ask the client to notice what they are doing overtly while ruminating and then put that in the top left square. A great question to ask is "If you imagine yourself as you are when you are ruminating, where are your eyes pointed?" Most often our eyes will be lowered, looking at the ground, or unfocused, as we are "in our head".

Another way to handle it is to simply let the client sort their rumination wherever, and then also follow up with any of the other squares. "Sure, so your rumination is down here, and what shows up on the outside for you as your are ruminating?", "I see, and as your are ruminating, what do you notice is important to you?/How connected do you feel to the people and things that are important to you?/Where are the people and things that are important to you as you are ruminating?"

Many might find that they disconnect while ruminating in a physical way, such as shutting themselves into a room, or into a screen, rather than connect and discuss what's going on with someone who they care deeply about.

Hey Rob, (I know I already responded to you on Twitter, but just so people can see here too).

PMC stands for present moment contact. The file name is just so I can keep them straight on my computer.
