Over the past few months I have been busy with transitioning to a new private practice, running the ACBS DEI SIG, and helping out with a couple of ACBS Committees. All of that has left little energy to focus on this newsletter, in case you’re wondering why I’ve been absent (more on that at the end of this post)
Here’s a few upcoming ACT Matrix related events (in reverse chronological order because it just worked out that way):
September 23-25
Simple Practice Therapy Reimagined Conference
Simple Practice, the popular EHR has been rolling out a ton of continuing education opportunities over the past two years, including on-demand learning (I have a CE video up at SimplePracticeLearning.com), and a yearly Therapy Reimagined Conference.
Somehow I’m a keynote speaker at this years conference??? I think I may be replacing somebody, because all they asked me to do was record a 40 minute video of myself talking about ANY TOPIC and send it in, and then I’ll be doing a live Q&A sometime on Friday the 24th. Stay tuned to the Therapy Reimagined Conference website for the complete schedule.
I will be speaking about how to set yourself up for success from the very first session, by easing clients into the therapeutic process, and introducing the ACT Matrix as a collaborative treatment tool. (If you are a subscriber to this newsletter there will not be anything new that you haven’t seen before, so no need to purchase a ticket to this thing just to see me. There are several other speakers and interesting topics.)
September 20th
Workshop for Ontario ACBS Chapter
I am presenting a 2-hour workshop for the Ontario ACBS Chapter on applying RFT concepts through the ACT Matrix.
My apologies for the name of this workshop, it’s basically like saying “Applying Biology Clinically. . .” but it’ll be a very focused look at how we can use the ACT Matrix to target the three key strategies of RFT for clinical practice as laid out in Törneke, et al.’s chapter Core strategies in psychological treatment: An RFT perspective. In The Wiley Handbook of Contextual Behavioral Science (2016).
Unfortunately, this presentation is only for members of the Ontario ACBS Chapter, and will not be recorded for later viewing.
September 17th
ACT Matrix Office Hours
Our next office hours event will focus on using the ACT Matrix for relationship counseling.
ACT Matrix Office Hours is a monthly open meeting hosted by me where we can talk all things matrix, therapy, ACT, etc.
Here’s some of what we do:
We engage in lively discussion about clinical work.
We workshop new and different ways of using the matrix.
We geek out about theoretical applications of ACT, RFT, and contextual behavioral science.
We learn techniques and share knowledge.
We connect & share with each other openly and honestly.
We’d be happy for you to join us.

DEI SIG Writing Group Matrix Event
The ACBS DEI SIG is hosting a monthly writer’s group focused on the writing and publishing process for professional, academic, and other writing projects. It’s a space for mutual accountability, collaboration, and education.
During our next meeting I will lead the group through an ACT Matrix focused on our identities as writers (who & what matters in that domain?, what shows up to get in the way?, etc.)
Voices & Values Podcast
https://anchor.fm/voices-values
I am reinvigorating my old podcast with a new name and new connection to the ACBS DEI SIG. This podcast will be interviews with members of ACBS about their lives, histories, and values.
You can subscribe via the link above, or search “Voices & Values” in your podcast app. The next episode will feature an interview with Dr. Houyuan Luo about his experience growing up in China and his views on therapy.
Recording: ACBS DEI SIG Event
Working Within, Without, and Against American Influence in Academia with special guest speaker Matthieu Villatte, PhD.
A few weeks ago I sat down with Dr. Matt Villatte, to expand on a point he made during a panel discussion at this years ACBS WorldCon. Dr. Villatte discusses his experience of publishing in academia in the US, and how it has forced him to “think like an American” for better or for worse. You can watch the recording below.
And in personal news my spouse and I are expecting our first child, due in April if everything goes well.
As you can see this is a busy season for me. Too busy, perhaps.
I’ve been toying with the idea of retiring from doing trainings/workshops (at least for the foreseeable future). They just haven’t been as fulfilling as they once were. I really enjoy doing the more informal conversational events, like the Office Hours, interviews, and discussions. So I want to continue doing those, but as I look at my calendar for 2022, I think I want to keep it clear of any PowerPoint slides.
Respectfully Submitted,
